Volunteer: Make Sassy Seatbelt pillows for people in cancer treatment (copy)

Project Details

Sassy Seatbelts provide comfort to patients going through Chemotherapy.  When people receive ongoing chemo, they often have a port-a-cath surgically implanted, just under the skin in the chest.  It provides easy access and keeps the frequent infusions from collapsing veins.  Though these ports make things easier, they are often right in the spot that can be irritated by wearing your seatbelt in the car.  That’s where these little pillows come in handy.  They attach to the seatbelt with velcro & relieve the pressure on the port.  Ingenious!

The pillows are a perfect project for our volunteers who prefer to sew (or just want a way to use leftover fabric) and can be easily donated right along with the caps.  All you need is:

Enough fabric for two 7-x-4-inch rectangles  (Since they aren’t touching skin, they don’t have to be super soft, but in the Sassy spirit, we recommend fun designs)Velcro – the sew-on kind, not with sticky backing, in a 5/8-inch width.Fiber fill stuffingthread

Treatment centers will gladly accept these pillows just as they are, but patients might not understand how to use them.  Plus, because immune systems are vulnerable, it’s always nice to have clean items packaged in a germ-resistant way.  That’s where we “Sassified” them!

We created these tags that you can download & print (3 per page). They have a little poem that explains how to use the pillow to “Sassy Up your Seatbelt”.  Click here to download –  Pillow Tags

Volunteer: Make & package Sassy Caps to donate to a local cancer center (copy)

What makes a Sassy Cap? SOFT

Sassy Caps can be knit, crocheted, or sewn, but they need to feel soft against bare skin – nothing itchy or irritating.

FUN

Sassy Caps are NOT boring. They are in bright, fun colors or patterns with a little bit of flair. Neutral colors are ok if you add a fun accent (like animal print, feathers, or sparkle) to jazz it up and make it sassy.

GIFTS

Sassy Caps are handmade and donated to friends, family, and treatment centers to brighten the day of people undergoing cancer treatment. Each one is packaged and labeled with the name of the volunteer who made it, and recipients often say, “I feel the love in this hat!”

You can make a Sassy Cap any way you like and give it anywhere in the world as long as it fits these three criteria

How do I make a Sassy Cap?

Sassy Caps are easy and fun to make, and you can create them at your own pace and in your own home.  Caps can be knit, crocheted, or even sewn on a sewing machine.  Remember...the only rules are that they be soft, fun, handmade, & given away! Choose the way you want to make your cap for directions, patterns & tutorials:

Loom Knitting - No skill required! Crocheting Sewing

Donating your Sassy Caps

No matter how you make your Sassy Cap, it’s really about the giving.  Whether you make them on your own and give them one by one to friends, or you organize a little “Sassy Circle” group to collect a bunch for a treatment center, once you have your caps, the process is the same…

Place your completed SOFT and FUN cap in a clear sandwich bag. Download & print labels here – Sassy Caps Tags. (This downloadable pdf is set up to print on Avery 5163 labels.  If you have any problems printing, make sure that “Fit to Size” is unchecked in your print dialogue box) Fill in your name, place the label on the bag and… Voila!  Your cap is now officially a Sassy Cap & ready to give away.
