Volunteer: Historic Tour Guide / Storytelling Docent at the Hugh Torance House and StoreThe historic Hugh Torance House & Store is looking for volunteers to serve as docents (tour guides) by leading guided tours of our incredibly preserved circa 1779 historic homesite and NC’s oldest standing mercantile store. This volunteer opportunity is excellent for those with an interest in history and who enjoy storytelling or performance art! The Hugh Torance House & Store, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is located at 8231 Gilead Road in Huntersville, NC and is open every Sunday starting in February and running through mid-December from 1pm until 4pm and for special events throughout the year. Guided living history tours of the circa 1779 homesite are provided to registered guests, walk-in visitors, and private groups like school tours, civic clubs, and local business organizations. Docents will volunteer alongside another docent or a storekeeper to perform the day’s various volunteer tasks. Expectations for docent volunteers include: Follow a checklist to open the historic site for visitors. Greet visitors and check in registered tour guests. Guide visitors in small groups along a tour of the site using a provided outline. Assist gift shop guests with store item purchases. Light housekeeping such as straightening store displays, dusting cobwebs, sweeping leaves off floors and stairways. Follow a checklist to close & secure the site. Volunteers are highly encouraged to dress in colonial costume attire to help maintain the living history aesthetic of the historic site.
