Description

The Hugh Torance House and Store (HTHS) invites the public to step back in time to the Celtic tradition of Samhain with a special Living History Day!

The origin of Halloween comes from the Festival of Samhain in Ireland’s Celtic past. This festival marked the end of the summer and signified the beginning of a new year. It was believed that souls of the departed would return to their former homes on the 31st of October. Given the Celtic roots of this holiday steeped in tradition, the Irish have developed many customs for Halloween over the years. This year’s event highlights 6 unique Irish Halloween traditions we bet you never knew!

Join us as we bring the late 18th and early 19th centuries to life through dedicated re-enactors, hands-on experiences, and enthusiastic volunteers celebrating the season. Colonial period attire and halloween costumes are welcome!

Attendees will have the opportunity to…

Meet Historic Reenactors: Interact with individuals dressed in period attire who will share stories and insights into the lives of people during the Revolutionary War era and beyond.

Explore Daily Life: Discover the fascinating details of late 18th and early 19th-century daily routines, crafts, and culture.

Enjoy a Cozy Atmosphere:  Unlike the 18th century, our historic house and store is heated, providing a comfortable environment for guests to explore the interior.

Gather round the Fire: Experience an authentic outdoor atmosphere with a captivating cauldron campfire where volunteers will share stories and keep warm.

Shop: Food and drinks, unique gifts, books, local honey, artisan crafts, and much more to explore in the Historic Store.

Dress up: While not required, guests are invited to get into the spirit and don period clothing if desired.

Play: Games for all ages!
