Do you enjoy sharing your historic trade, craft, or skill - like blacksmithing, spinning, hearth cooking, tailoring, etc. - and your love for knowledge of it with the community? The historic Hugh Torance House & Store is looking for re-enactors to demonstrate their historic trade, craft, or skill at our incredibly preserved circa 1779 historic homesite and NC’s oldest standing mercantile store during special events throughout the year.
The Hugh Torance House & Store, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is located at 8231 Gilead Road in Huntersville, NC and is open every Sunday starting in February and running through mid-December from 1pm until 4pm and for special events throughout the year. Guided living history tours of the circa 1779 homesite are provided to registered guests, walk-in visitors, and private groups like school tours, civic clubs, and local business organizations.
Historic trade or skill demonstrators will volunteer alongside other volunteers such as docents (tour guide) and storekeepers. Expectations for historic demonstration volunteers include:
Dress in colonial costume attire to help maintain the living history aesthetic of the historic site.
Bring the historical items, materials, supplies, and display items you need to set up and perform your trade, craft or skill.
Greet & engage visitors by sharing knowledge of your historic trade or skill while practicing it.
Volunteering at the Hugh Torance House & Store allows our nonprofit to offer high-quality, engaging experiences that foster community stewardship of local history! Our volunteer team is an incredible group of dedicated citizens representing local and national historic groups like the Mecklenburg Historic Association and the Sons and the Daughters of the American Revolution as well as Hollywood and Broadway actors, local elected officials, high school and college students, retirees, and local performance artists. Join us to showcase and share the rich history of the Hugh Torance House & Store to ensure its preservation!
