Every single day in the US, we chuck enough grub to fill up the bellies of every hungry person out there. But here's the kicker: our "food run" program in affiliation with Second Harvest of Northwest North Carolina rescues perfectly good food from spots like restaurants, caterers, and grocery stores.
We then use that rescued food to stock coolers which are used by our kitchen staff for our community soup kitchen, and some of this food also goes towards our RideUnited grocery delivery program.
Our food runs happen daily, but we need extra volunteer support on Saturdays and Sundays when our regular staff members take much-needed days off. You would be responsible for driving our shelter van along with a resident volunteer as we visit two local Food Lion stores and pack up food donations in coolers, which are then transported back to the shelter kitchen.
There is some lifting and bending involved in this volunteer job but it's super rewarding! You will also need to submit your driver's license information before driving the shelter van.
Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes -- we go out on food runs 7 days a week, regardless of the weather.
