The historic Hugh Torance House & Store is looking for volunteers to serve as storekeepers on Sunday's in our incredibly preserved circa 1779 historic homesite and NC’s oldest standing mercantile store. This volunteer opportunity is an excellent service experience for those with an interest in history or shopping local!
The Hugh Torance House & Store, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is located at 8231 Gilead Road in Huntersville, NC and is open every Sunday starting in February and running through mid-December from 1pm until 4pm and for special events throughout the year. Guided living history tours of the circa 1779 homesite are provided to registered guests, walk-in visitors, and private groups like school tours, civic clubs, and local business organizations.
A storekeeper will volunteer alongside at least one volunteer docent (tour guide) to perform the day’s various volunteer tasks. Expectations for storekeeper volunteers include:
Follow a checklist to open the historic site for visitors.
Greet visitors and check in registered tour guests.
Assist gift shop guests with store item purchases.
Light housekeeping such as straightening store displays, dusting cobwebs, sweeping leaves off floors and stairways.
Follow a checklist to close & secure the site.
Volunteers are highly encouraged to dress in colonial costume attire to help maintain the living history aesthetic of the historic site.
Volunteering at the Hugh Torance House & Store allows our nonprofit to offer high-quality, engaging experiences that foster community stewardship of local history! Our volunteer team is an incredible group of dedicated citizens representing local and national historic groups like the Mecklenburg Historic Association and the Sons and the Daughters of the American Revolution as well as Hollywood and Broadway actors, local elected officials, high school and college students, retirees, and local performance artists.
